Pink Petals

Today, I'm going to be sharing my Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe. Seriously guys, I cannot have enough of these cookies, and neither can my fiance. We pretty much eat the batch as it's on the cooling rack. To help portion ourselves though, a lot of this dough gets frozen in pre-made cookie dough balls until we're ready to have a treat! This recipe creates about 2 dozen or so cookies, depending on the size of your cookies. And without further ado, here is my Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 325F. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, and granulated white sugar together until it is fluffy. Add in the egg and vanilla, mixing until combined.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together. Gradually add this to the wet mixture until combined, then fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Roll cookie dough into balls using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, and place it on a lined baking sheet about 2-3 inches apart. Bake for 12-15 minutes for a soft, gooey cookie, and up to 17 minutes for a crispy, chewy cookie. (Add another minute for frozen cookie dough balls).
And there you have it! The great thing about this recipe is that it is so versatile. You can substitute anything for the chocolate chips, such as Toblerone or chopped up candy bars, or even change it to a sugar cookie by replacing the brown sugar with granulated white sugar.

Link your favourite cookie dough recipe below, I'd love to try some more! :)

Before working at the local liquor store for a bit, I knew absolutely nothing about alcohol - wines, beers, and spirits were basically a foreign language to me. After learning more about alcohol, I noticed that J. Lohr was an extremely popular brand, and rightly so! J. Lohr's Cabernet Sauvignon has been around for quite some time, and consistently receives 4 star reviews on the internet. At $23.95 a bottle, it's my go-to gift of choice for wine drinkers and can easily be found in the Vintages section.
J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon
This Californian Cabernet Sauvignon is full bodied with notes of black cherry, blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar, and spices - making this the perfect wine to pair with red meats, especially steak.

If you're already well seasoned with J. Lohr's Cab Sauv, you've got to check out their new Merlot ($22.95) that was just released this year! This Merlot blend has fruity notes similar to the Cab Sauv, but is less sweet and a bit more smokey.

What's your go-to wine for gifting?

Tsujiri hit Toronto not too long ago with their Dundas location, serving matcha based desserts and drinks. But their fairly new North York location manages to serve up savoury matcha dishes as well. To be honest, I was never really interested in Tsujiri. Don't get me wrong - I love a good matcha latte, but there was just something about matcha noodles that sounded so unappealing to me. But we ended up giving Tsujiri a shot because most restaurants in the area were closed and we didn't feel like having a hot bowl of ramen because the weather itself was pretty warm.
Tsujiri North York
I got the Sapporo style Miso Tsuke Soba along with an Iced Matcha Latte.

The matcha flavoured soba is served cold on a plate with the broth on the side - the idea is to dip the noodles into the broth rather than eating the noodles straight from the broth. I found this to be quite an interesting way to eat noodles, and it's pretty genius cause it works for both hot and cold weather. Upon first bite, you can really taste the matcha in the noodles adding a little bit of bitterness and sweetness to the noodles. After a a couple bites though, it becomes a secondary lingering taste to the perfectly balanced salty broth. I do wish we were given spoons for the broth though because it was so delicious - plus it's pretty hard to get all the toppings, such as corn, out of the broth without a spoon.

The iced matcha latte was delicious and probably the best iced matcha latte I've ever had. I believe there was two to choose from and I got the sweeter of the two, but it was just sweet enough to balance out the slight bitterness of the matcha and kind of reminded me of brown sugar.

Maybe it was fate, or maybe it was a happy accident - but nonetheless, my friend and I enjoyed the food a lot more than we were expecting to and we'll definitely be coming back for more!

What's the most unique matcha dish you've ever had?

Chocolats Favoris is a Montreal based chocolate shop that has slowly crossed it's Quebec borders, opening a several shops in Ontario and one in British Columbia. Their Vaughan located opened up last year, which is currently the one of two locations in the GTA, and I couldn't wait to head over and visit!
Chocolats Favoris
Like their name states, Chocolats Favoris specializes in chocolate, containing a plethora of chocolates and fondues. The fondues are so easy to make and are to die for - simply heat the can in a water bath until the chocolate is melted! These can also be purchased at select grocery stores, so you don't have to visit a Chocolats Favoris store for one of these bad boys, but the selection may be more limited. Each location also has an ice cream counter where you can get interesting dipped soft serve cones, sundaes, and milkshakes! For the dipped soft serve cones, there are a handful of  combinations to choose from, starring each of the flavoured dips that they have, or you could make your own.
Chocolats Favoris
This was my second time being at Chocolats Favoris, and based on both experiences I would advise on choosing a dark chocolate base instead of a milk or white chocolate base, and getting a cone rather than a cup. It sounds silly to give advice on a dipped cone, but Chocolats Favoris takes it to another level. The chocolate dip surrounding the ice cream is THICC, literally. Because the chocolate layer is so thick, a fairly sweet milk or white chocolate can taste overly sweet when combined with toppings and vanilla soft serve. However, I'm the type of girl who can't handle cake and ice cream together, so if you've got a giant sweet tooth, go for it, cause you do you, booboo. Also, when the thick layer of chocolate dip hardens, it's actually quite difficult to bite into it without making a mess, rendering a spoon useless - which is where the cone over cup comes into play.

All in all, I can never say no to ice cream, and Chocolats Favoris is no different. Their chocolates and fondues are also really yummy, making them a great addition to gifts or gift baskets.

What's your favourite thing to dip in chocolate fondue?
Mine are apple slices! They hold well so they don't require fondue forks, and provide just the right amount of sweetness to compliment the chocolate.

Mildred's Temple Kitchen, located in Liberty Village, is famous for their brunch, so naturally I just had to make a pit stop here for brunch. The restaurant's decor is rustic and modern, making it very Instagram worthy. We came here for brunch on a Friday and the restaurant was quite busy, so reservations are definitely recommended if you plan on coming by on the weekend!  Upon being seated by our bubbly server, we ordered the Mrs. Biederhof's Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes, Big B'lunch Skillet, and the GINger Fizz to try out.

The GINger Fizz was an interesting hybrid between a regular gin and tonic and a mojito, using gin, ginger beer, lemon, and mint. The ginger is very powerful in this drink and punches the back of your throat in the first sip, but in a good way! Meanwhile, the mint and lemon slightly neutralizes the bitter gin aftertaste. If you like gin and ginger, I would definitely recommend giving this drink a try.
 Mildred's Temple Kitchen
Let me just start off by saying that I'm not a fan of pancakes, let alone blueberry pancakes. I'm very picky with cooked fruit and would rather go with chocolate chip pancakes if I had to, BUT I really did enjoy these blueberry pancakes. They're moist, dense, and fluffy at the same time, making them quite filling despite the seemingly small serving size. The blueberry compote that tops it off is to die for, and because there's blueberry compote, whipped cream, and a generous drizzle of syrup, these pancakes are perfect as served and do not require additional sweetness. So far, these truly are my favourite blueberry pancakes and I would definitely come back for these.
To balanced out the sweet with some savoury, we got the Big B'lunch Skillet, with spicy pulled pork, roasted onions, potatoes, black beans, two sunny side up eggs, and piri piri salsa. Following the delicious blueberry pancakes, this dish can be a bit underwhelming. I expected the skillet to be much larger based on the name, but it's diameter was about the length of my hand. The food itself was good, but I found that it was mostly potatoes and onions. It didn't quite meet our expectations nor did it satisfy our savoury tooth, so I think the next time we visit, we'll just stick to the blueberry pancakes.

Where's your favourite brunch place in the GTA?

The Gourmet Food & Wine Expo is in Toronto for this weekend from November 16-19 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The Gourmet Food &Wine Expo is just as it's name states and has long list of exhibitors  - think IMATS, but with food and alcohol instead.
How does it work? Buy an admission ticket (price varies depending on date/package) along with sampling tickets to issue to vendors for food and drink samples ($20/20 tickets). I was fortunate enough to attend as media this year and only paid for my sampling tickets.
Note: Since alcohol is served at this event, only those over 19 with valid ID may enter.
I spent my evening at the expo with Madeline (Classically Contemporary) and Jenny (JennyBeaned), and I'm pretty sure we did our best in seeing everything the expo had to offer. I was being quite frugal with my tickets as I only purchased 20 and wanted to keep within that budget. I found most vendors charged between 1-7 tickets for their samples - wine and alcohol ranged from 1-3 tickets and food ranged from 1-7. I would definitely recommend going around first to see what each booth has to offer before diving in.

Notable Exhibitors:
Acadian Sturgeon - sample sturgeon pate for 2 tickets and sturgeon caviar for 3 tickets
Dare2Dream Farm - sample their Maple Floss, Maple Vinegar and Honey Vinegar - these products were also available to purchase and were quite the unique find
Switzerland Cheese Marketing Inc - this was by far the most popular booth at the event and it revolved around raclette as a rosette with jam or melted on toast.
Ungava Spirits Co - sample their spirits for 1-2 tickets each and receive a metal camping mug (in the photo above) to keep. This was definitely a big hit with the crowd as there was a constant line up and many people asked where we got the mug.

Food & Drinks:
Kinka Family - offered torched sushi, ramen, and a pork belly bun (5 tickets each)
Oyster Boy - 2 tickets for a freshly shucked oyster (or 10 tickets for 6 oysters)
Mott's Clamato Caesar - receive a small cup of caesar for 1 ticket
Tito's Handmade Vodka - Purchase a drink a receive a mason jar mug to keep
The Pie Guyz - 3 tickets for a mini beef, chicken or veggie pie, or 7 tickets for a full sized one

Freebies:
Barilla Pasta - sample of their gluten free pasta
Dimpflmeier Bakery - samples of their various breads and pretzels
OLG The Big $pin - free The Big Spin lotto ticket & spin for a prize
OLG Slots at Woodbine - spin for $ towards the Slots at Woodbine
Whole Foods - $5 coupon towards a purchase in-store
Virginia Tourism - enter for a chance to win a trip to Virginia

Overall, I enjoyed my time at the expo but it could become quite pricey if you come with an empty stomach. It was a great experience though and I would definitely recommend attending if you haven't done so before, or if you're a food and wine enthusiast.

Winterlicious is a great time to try out some restaurants within a price budget. For $18, my friend and I checked out the Momofuku Noodle Bar. We got to sit right on the island of the kitchen and watch the cooks prepare out food. Most of the ingredients were prepped before open so only assembly was needed – a great method for getting food out fast especially considering how busy it was.
For snacks, we got the chicken meatball bun and the pork belly bun. The buns were soft, warm and mildly chewy with a hint of sweetness to them. The chicken meatballs were perfectly seasoned and came with ssam sauce, lettuce and smoked pickle - but could have used some more texture to in the meat as they were fairly large. The pork belly was soft and had the right amount of BBQ sauce and came with a bit of slaw and sweet pickle – but would have been better with a piece of crispy skin added.
Onto the noodle bowls! We got the tan tan ramen and beef udon noodle. The tan tan ramen had just enough soup to cover the noodles and was dressed with ground spicy chicken, bok choy, green onion, and a soft boiled egg topped with sesame and spices. The ramen was good, probably one of the best ramen I’ve ever had as it wasn’t too spicy, salty or filling. The only thing I would swap out is the ground chicken for cuts of chicken. The beef udon noodle came with slices of beef and pickled onion, green onion, basil, xian spice and cured yolk. The last three ingredients were questionable as we didn’t see or taste it, but the beef udon was fairly delicious with a flavour similar to curry and provided a bit of kick as the spiciness caught up to you throughout the meal.
Dessert consisted of the coke float soft serve and the spiced chocolate mousse. The coke float soft serve was an interesting twist although it was served to us a bit runny. The flavour tasted similar to coke, but the spices in the soft serve were more pronounced than the sweetness compared to actual coke. The spiced chocolate mousse was served cold and came in a cute little jar. It was rich and had the density of a ganache rather than a mousse, and was decorated with honeycomb toffee bits. I was worried that this would be too spicy, but there was just enough Sichuan spice to enhance the chocolate flavour.

I probably wouldn’t go the Momofuku Noodle Bar on the reg, but it’s definitely a place where you should try at least once if you’re in Toronto, a foodie, a noodle enthusiast or all three.

Did you attend Winterlicious or try any new restaurants lately?

I am a huge fan of Korean food, but one dish that hasn't quite won my heart yet is bibimbap. Bibimbap is literally translated to "mixed rice", and is usually served in a hot stone bowl with various veggies, a sunny side egg and gochujang (a Korean hot sauce). Enter Bi Bim Bap, a restaurant that adds a twist to this Korean staple. Bi Bim Bap provides various Korean dishes and allows diners to choose what goes on their bibimbap (egg, beef, chicken, spicy chicken, tofu or mushroom) as well as the rice (white or brown).
Every meal comes starts off with a small plate of kimchi, pickled daikon and carrots as well as a bowl of miso soup. To start, I always get the Kim Chi Fries: julienned fries topped with kimchi, Korean BBQ sauce, sesame mayo and green onions.
Next up is my favourite: the Beef Bibimbap, which comes withradish, spinach, bean sprouts, carrots, cucumber, burdock, cabbage, zucchini,  dried seaweed, sesame seeds topped with thin marinated slices of beef. I always add soy garlic sauce and a bit of original gochujang to my bowl for a little sweet heat, before mixing it up. The hot stone bowl keeps everything piping and helps to cook and bring everything together. I like to press the contents onto the sides of the bowl to keep it hot and to crisp up the rice.
The meal then ends with a refreshing cold cinnamon drink which is topped with a single pine nut. This drink is like heaven because it cools down the tongue - whether it be from the heat, the spice, or both!
If you live in Toronto, I definitely recommend checking this place out - it's definitely one of my go-to places for a hearty meal. Bon appetit!

I was invited to attend the Maille Flavour Studio at Taste of Toronto (June 23-26). Here, you can sample their many mustards (Dijon, Honey Mustard, Original, etc.) or their gourmet ones (Truffle and Wine, Noix, Blue Cheese, etc.) as well as the option of purchasing these mustards. Mustard Sommelier Harry Lalousis was a guest at Maille and hosted workshops on the hour about different topics such as dips and marinades.
For a small fee of $2, you could make your own mustard! There were two stations with many ingredients to create your own mustard. There was no recipe for the mustards, just a basic guideline of how to mix them, so it was really fun to try and make our own concoctions.
I used the Original mustard as the base and added raspberries, basil, maple syrup and lemon juice. It was definitely interesting and would be better as a salad dressing.
The best thing about the Maille Flavour Studio is the creativity behind all the mustards and recipes. We got to sample the Que ca Maille cocktail, made primarily with mustard, apple juice and vodka. I know, I know, it seems so weird - I mean mustard... in a cocktail?! But my friend and I gave it a go and it tasted SO good! One of the best I've tried and I'm not even a fan of alcohol! If you're interested in checking out this cocktail, it's on the Maille Website here.

As for the rest of the Taste of Toronto Event, I would say that it's definitely pricey. It was my first time so I didn't quite know what to expect. The general admission tickets are $20 and every booth and restaurant has menus which you can order food and/or drinks from. The event takes Crowns instead of money, which have an activation fee of $1, and can be reloaded throughout the day at the Crown banks inside the event. There were many more booths than restaurants, mainly breweries and vineyards. Listed below are the food menus which start at 6 Crowns ($6).

My friend and I were a bit low on money (student life - sigh) so we stuck to affordable eats. We visited:

Kinka - Takoyaki $6
Fried octopus dough balls with mayo, teriyaki sauce and bonito flakes.
The Drake - True North Salmon Fried Rice $6
Fried rice with XO sauce, bits of salmon and topped with roe placed on two lettuce leafs.
Piano Piano - Veal Parmesan Sangouche $10
Veal parmesan sandwich with hot peppers and onions.

All three dishes were delicious and filling. We washed them all down with complimentary drinks from Metro (lemonade & watermelon juice) and Nespresso (coffee, lattes or cappuccinos).
All in all, the Maille Flavour Studio was definitely a great experience. I'm glad to have experienced Taste of Toronto this year, but would be hesitant to come back just because the costs do add up.

Have you attended any food events in Toronto this Summer?

The Toronto Vegetarian Association is kicking off the fifth year of Veggielicious! Veggielicious is a two-week celebration of vegetarian and vegan cuisine. From May 6-22, over 40 restaurants across the GTA will be featuring vegetarian and vegan prix-fixe menus and deals. I was invited to the kick-off party that showcased some participating restaurants in Veggielicious this year.
First up is Kupfert and Kim, a vegan quick-service restaurant with 6 locaions across Toronto.
Oxaca
Oxaca

 First Canadian Place
First Canadian Place
Attendees got to choose a sample of their two best sellers: Oxaca and First Canadian Place. Oxaca is basically a vegan burrito bowl, so I decided to choose something different and got First Canadian Place. I've never tried tempeh before and I'm not yet sold, but the rest of the dish was delish! I now understand the hype with Kupfert and Kim because they make a pretty darn good vegan meal!
Tabule is a Lebanese restaurant with 2 locations in Toronto, offering vegetarian dishes.
Attendees got to try their homemade dishes: Falafel, Rice Pudding, and Hummus & Babaganuj. I really enjoyed all three dishes and it's hard to pick a favourite, but I really liked the rice pudding because I believe it's either vegan or gluten free (I'm forget which one).Falafel, rice pudding, hummus, babaganuj
Fabarnak is located on Church Street and also offers catering.
squash risotto, falafel
Attendees got to sample Squash Risotto and Falafel on a Pita. I've never tried Squash Risotto, because vegetables, but I was pleasantly surprised but think it would have been better with a bit of cheese. The Falafel was okay, but Tabule's was much better.
Squash Risotto, falafel
Saving the best for last - Sweets from the Earth, a vegan bakery with both gluten free and nut free options. Sweets from the Earth had an amazing display of some of the desserts they make. My friend and I tried the Sour Cream Coffee Cake Muffin and Apple Crumble Pie Square, both of which are nut free. I also took home a S'mores Cookie and it beat the other two by far! Curious about the marshmallows, the rep said they make their own vegan marshmallows in house! (Or factory I guess).
coffee cake, apple crumble
Beau's was there as well, sampling their many craft beers as the Beer Partner for Veggielicious. I'm not a fan of beer, but through my professional experience, I guess, the guys at Beau's are honestly so nice and down to earth. It's great to see local Canadian breweries become successful in the industry.
Not pictures is Foodoora who is the Delivery Partner of Veggielicious, delivering meals on bikes to help save the environment. If you haven't tried to order from Foodora yet, use the coupon code: CANEVVB5Cs to get $10 off your first order (until 07/31/2016).

Honestly, I don't think vegetarian/vegan life is for me because I really don't like vegetables, but I really liked everything I tried here. I also don't think I've consciously tried vegetarian or vegan food, but after this experience I'm definitely more open to it. I love that Toronto is such a diverse city that has so many dietary options available for those who are vegetarian/vegan.

Are you a vegetarian or vegan? Have any vegetarian or vegan restaurant suggestions within the GTA?

Detox teas have become quite popular lately, but do they actually work? I just finished a 28 days of SkinnyMint's 28 Day Teatox ($69.90) and I have to say, I'm not ready to board the detox tea train.
SkinnyMint's Teatox consists of 28 day teas and 14 night teas. The morning boost teas are to be had every morning before or during breakfast while the night cleanse teas are to be had every other night after your last meal.

The morning boost tea contains: green tea, yerba mate, nettle leaves, dandelion, guarana and hints of grapefruit, strawberry and pineapple.
These ingredients claim to help boost energy, improve immunity, burn calories, boost metabolism, curb appetite, cleanse, detoxify, improve digestion, increase physical endurance, improve alertness, stimulate digestion and is a natural diuretic and antioxidant.

The night cleanse tea contains: ginger root, orange leaves, lemongrass, senna leaves, licorice root, and hints of peppermint, hawthorn berry and psylium husk.
These ingredients claim to help detoxify, anti-bloat, improve digestion, promote good sleep, anti-microbal, anti-bacterial, enhance complexion, reduce appetite, relieve cramps and constipation and is a natural laxative.

So... what exactly does all that mean?
A lot of these ingredients sound promising in helping you lose weight, but this is NOT a diet tea and should not be used as such. This seems a bit misleading because SkinnyMint likes to advertise users losing weight while on the 28 day teatox, but it's in conjunction with healthy eating and regular exercise.
With the morning boost tea, I did not find much of a difference in my energy or appetite levels - they were pretty normal. I'm also a frequent caffeine drinker so that might be why. I did really like the taste of the morning boost tea and found it didn't get bitter from over steeping like green teas usually do. If it wasn't so expensive, I would definitely continue drinking the morning boost tea just because I enjoyed the taste.

The night cleanse tea was a hit or miss. In the beginning, I didn't quite realize what the point of this tea was until my friend, who was doing the teatox with me, told me that it was essentially a laxative. Besides the weird spicy taste of the tea, it didn't do much for me... until the third week where my body started responding to it. I've never taken a laxative before, so this was quite an experience. It's not immediate since you drink it at night, but it definitely kicks in the next day. I would kind of dread drinking this tea both because of the taste and the aftermath, and would plan out my days accordingly - no way in heck was I drinking this if I had a full day of school and work coming tomorrow.

Now, would I recommend the teatox? No.
While on this teatox, I did find myself drinking a lot of tea by constantly refilling my tumbler with hot water once I was out and there would always be a little flavour left behind, which helped me with my daily water intake because I can barely finish a 500ml bottle a day. The night cleanse definitely works too, but personally I like to have my bowels work on their own...
BUT
SkinnyMint's 28 Day Teatox is not a great way to detox your body and although advertised like one, it is not a diet tea. It may seem like it at first because you are filling yourself up with a lot of liquids to curb hunger and in turn lose a lot of water weight from constantly drinking and disposing of it, but it's not a weight loss miracle. Eating healthy and drinking plenty of fluids would be the most helpful n detoxing your body.

Have you tried any detox teas? What was your experience like?
