Pink Petals

February was a horrid month for me which left skincare and beauty on the back burner for most of it. I still managed to finish some things but this month is mostly tosses.
I thought it would be nice to start a three star rating system for my monthly empties and tosses posts, so here is my scale!
☆ - All aboard the nope train!
☆☆ - Meh... I'm indifferent...
☆☆☆ - YAAASSSSSS
Full Sized Items
LUSH Cranberry Festive Face Mask ☆☆
Thayers Peach Witch Hazel Astringent ☆☆☆
(I broke the lid of the original bottle so I transferred the remaining into a travel bottle - ghetto and savvy to the max!)
Freeman Facial Brightening Paper Mask in Rose ☆☆

Samples
Revlon Revitalist Miracle Blur Instant Skin Smoother ☆
(THIS FEELS LIKE YOU'RE JUST APPLYING SILICONE TO THE FACE. NOPE.)
The Body Shop  Vitamin E Moisture Cream ☆☆
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Cleansing Water ☆☆
Burt's Bees Radiance Day Cream with Royal Jelly ☆☆
THEFACESHOP White Tree Snow Exfoliating Foam Cleanser ☆☆
Issey Miyake L'eau D'issey ☆☆
Taylor Taylor Swift ☆☆
Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto ☆☆☆

Tosses
I recently reorganized my polishes into giant tupperware containers, but a couple of my polishes dried out in the process. I'm not too sure why but I'm guessing the weight of the containers stacked together may have cracked the bottles just enough to dry them out. I'm not too disappointed with losing these polishes because I have more than enough, but hopefully the remaining polishes will be okay!
Santee Plus Light Purple
China Glaze Crackle Cracked Concrete
Sally Hansen Xtremewear Strobe Light
Wet n Wild Wild Shine Black Creme

Any tosses for you this month?

Wet n Wild is releasing a number of cruelty free Mega Slick Lip Glosses - 17 to be exact!
pnkpetals
During a recent Wet n Wild event, I managed to grab 15 of the 17 to swatch! I'm not a fan of lip glosses in general because they just make my lips feel sticky, but these glosses are fairly good in colour payoff (except the sheer ones) and stickiness.

The first 5 glosses in this line are quite clear except for Sinless which is a beautiful metallic pink.

The next 5 are pink and gold toned glosses with sheer but buildable colour.

The last 5 are my absolute favourite - the colour payoff is beautiful and does well on it's own.

The last 2 in this line are Strawberry Ice and Great Coral-ation.

I have been using these to add a bit of colour on my lips when I'm not in the mood for lipstick. The glosses don't last long but the darker glosses do leave a nice stain. I'd definitely recommend picking a couple of these up if you like lip glosses!

Are you a fan of lip glosses?

Detox teas have become quite popular lately, but do they actually work? I just finished a 28 days of SkinnyMint's 28 Day Teatox ($69.90) and I have to say, I'm not ready to board the detox tea train.
SkinnyMint's Teatox consists of 28 day teas and 14 night teas. The morning boost teas are to be had every morning before or during breakfast while the night cleanse teas are to be had every other night after your last meal.

The morning boost tea contains: green tea, yerba mate, nettle leaves, dandelion, guarana and hints of grapefruit, strawberry and pineapple.
These ingredients claim to help boost energy, improve immunity, burn calories, boost metabolism, curb appetite, cleanse, detoxify, improve digestion, increase physical endurance, improve alertness, stimulate digestion and is a natural diuretic and antioxidant.

The night cleanse tea contains: ginger root, orange leaves, lemongrass, senna leaves, licorice root, and hints of peppermint, hawthorn berry and psylium husk.
These ingredients claim to help detoxify, anti-bloat, improve digestion, promote good sleep, anti-microbal, anti-bacterial, enhance complexion, reduce appetite, relieve cramps and constipation and is a natural laxative.

So... what exactly does all that mean?
A lot of these ingredients sound promising in helping you lose weight, but this is NOT a diet tea and should not be used as such. This seems a bit misleading because SkinnyMint likes to advertise users losing weight while on the 28 day teatox, but it's in conjunction with healthy eating and regular exercise.
With the morning boost tea, I did not find much of a difference in my energy or appetite levels - they were pretty normal. I'm also a frequent caffeine drinker so that might be why. I did really like the taste of the morning boost tea and found it didn't get bitter from over steeping like green teas usually do. If it wasn't so expensive, I would definitely continue drinking the morning boost tea just because I enjoyed the taste.

The night cleanse tea was a hit or miss. In the beginning, I didn't quite realize what the point of this tea was until my friend, who was doing the teatox with me, told me that it was essentially a laxative. Besides the weird spicy taste of the tea, it didn't do much for me... until the third week where my body started responding to it. I've never taken a laxative before, so this was quite an experience. It's not immediate since you drink it at night, but it definitely kicks in the next day. I would kind of dread drinking this tea both because of the taste and the aftermath, and would plan out my days accordingly - no way in heck was I drinking this if I had a full day of school and work coming tomorrow.

Now, would I recommend the teatox? No.
While on this teatox, I did find myself drinking a lot of tea by constantly refilling my tumbler with hot water once I was out and there would always be a little flavour left behind, which helped me with my daily water intake because I can barely finish a 500ml bottle a day. The night cleanse definitely works too, but personally I like to have my bowels work on their own...
BUT
SkinnyMint's 28 Day Teatox is not a great way to detox your body and although advertised like one, it is not a diet tea. It may seem like it at first because you are filling yourself up with a lot of liquids to curb hunger and in turn lose a lot of water weight from constantly drinking and disposing of it, but it's not a weight loss miracle. Eating healthy and drinking plenty of fluids would be the most helpful n detoxing your body.

Have you tried any detox teas? What was your experience like?

Julep's Gayle is true to it's description of a deep aubergine creme. Out of all of Julep's polishes, I think I like their creme finish the best.

What's your preferred finish?

Matte lips are all the rage and now Wet n Wild is releasing their own cruelty free line of Velvet Matte Lip Colors!

There are nine shades of Velvet Matte Lip Color:

Hickory Smoked
Charred Cherry
Lie Lack
Berry Tales
Shelly Shocked
Turnt Orange

One thing I don't like about matte lips in general is that they tend to look too chalky and accentuate dry lips, but these apply quite smoothly on bare lips - however, they don't apply so well on top of lip balm. I like that it's a twist up stick which allows for a more precise application. The colour payoff for these lip crayons are pretty good too - the above swatches were not swiped more than twice. It's not the most impressive in terms of lasting power, but the colours do fade nicely on the lips instead of settling in the fine lines and looking chalky.

I would definitely recommend the Velvet Matte Lip Colors - especially if you want to try matte lips without forking over a lot of money.

How do you feel about matte lips?

As a coffee addict, LUSH’s Cup O’ Coffee Face and Body Mask ($9.99-$19.99) is right up my alley and smells like an insanely delicious cup of mocha. It claims to exfoliate and smooth the skin while leaving you looking and feeling fresh.
Notable ingredients include ground coffee, agave syrup, glycerin and caffeine, along with oils and extracts. The ground coffee gives the mask it’s coarse texture and is acts as the exfoliator. Agave and glycerin, on the other hand, give the mask it’s smooth and gelatinous texture while the caffeine helps awaken the skin. I love that this mask is smooth but thick enough to stay put with a consistency like pudding. I also love that it uses ground coffee as the exfoliator instead of microbeads, which has blown up for it’s effect on our ecosystems.
I also use this as a pre-shower mask, because it’s just easier to wash off when you don’t have to work about getting tiny coffee grinds everywhere. Its gelatinous texture makes it a dream when applying it to the skin and I usually leave it on for 10 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing it off. Although it is both a face and body mask, I can’t justify using this on my body when I have many other body scrubs. I’m not sure if the coffee and caffeine wake up my skin like they are intended to, but it doesn’t have any negative effects so I’m not complaining.

Would I recommend this face mask? 100x yes. It smells amazing, it feels amazing and my skin seems to like it. Did I mention it smells amazing? If you don’t like coffee, I dare you to smell it, maybe it’ll change your mind!

With red out of the way, I definitely had to paint my nails pink as well with Julep's Niecy. Niecy is also a creme finish described as a bright pink - just a little less intense hot than a hot pink.

What's your favourite Julep polish?

Demeter is known for their large collection of scents, but what do you do when you can't just pick one? Thankfully, Demeter has a solution for us indecisive shoppers. Through the Canadian Beauty Bloggers network, Demeter graciously sent us their Foolproof Blending Duo ($35) and Foolproof Blending Trio ($45).
Vanilla, Floral
I love the idea of these kits because you can mix scents to create your own custom scent, or wear the scents alone. These kits would create lovely gifts since it's sometimes difficult to buy one specific fragrance for someone, especially if you're not sure if they like certain scents. Demeter makes it a whole lot easier with scent categories to choose from. I opted for the Floral Duo Custom Fragrance Kit and the Vanilla Base Note Trio. Demeter also threw in a travel sized Laundromat.

It might seem difficult at first to mix the fragrances, unsure of what you're going to create and how it's going to turn out. I experimented by spraying varying amounts of each fragrance on myself throughout a week to find the scent that I liked the most.
I absolutely love sweet scents, and the Vanilla Base Note Trio is definitely right up my alley. The Trio kit includes Gingerbread, Angel Food and Hawaiian Vanilla along with a couple test strips.
Gingerbread
Angel Food
Hawaiian Vanilla
Favourite mix: 1:1:1
The Floral Duo Custom Fragrance Kit contains Jasmine, Lavender and an empty bottle along with tools to create your custom scent.
Jasmine
Lavender
Favourite mix: 2:1 Jasmine and Lavender

Surprisingly, I found the scents from both kits compliment each other quite well. I'm not a huge fan of Lavender, it's just a bit too herbal, while the smell of Jasmine has grown on me. On the other hand, sweet scents are sometimes, well, too sweet. With some experimenting, I have three additional favourite mixes:
1:1 Jasmine and Angel Food
1:! Jasmine and Hawaiian Vanilla
1:1 Lavender and Gingerbread

The best part about these kits is that there are a bunch of scent profiles to choose from - some are limited edition and new Signature Blending Trios are being released every two months!

What is your favourite base note scent? Mine is coconut!

It's February! And in the spirit of Valentine's, I decided to paint my nails red with Julep's Rose. Rose is a beautiful watermelon red creme polish - just a bit more pink than a cherry red.

How are you celebrating Valentine's Day? (I'm working! Gotta pay them bills!)
