Pink Petals

Mother's Day is right around the corner, and this year, Caryl Baker is partnering up with Starlight Children's Foundation for the first "Your Purchase Counts" campaign.
This campaign will run between May 1 - May 8, $1 will be donated to Starlight Children's Foundation Canada for every Caryl Baker lipstick ($18.50) sold. On May 8, Caryl Baker will host families from the Starlight Foundation and provide the mothers and daughters with day makeovers and an afternoon of pampering.

Caryl Baker's lipstick collection contains 40 different shades, of which I received 5:
(Note: Marilyn is not as bright as in the photo but for some reason my camera really picked up the red)
Supertramp - shimmery bright watermelon pink
Flirt - shimmery fuscia with blue undertones
Roseberry - cream muted pink brown
Marilyn - cream cherry red
Fawn - cream orange-y nude
One thing I absolutely love about these lipsticks is the packaging. The lipsticks are encased in a matte packaging with a gem in the centre and when opened, the cap flips open to present a mirror! I have one other lipstick with a mirror attached to it, but I like how this one flips open so it can stay clean. It's so genius - I can't even.

These lipsticks are quite pigmented and have a buttery texture. which is great for dry lips. They are not scented, so they smell like waxy lipstick, if that makes sense. The lipsticks last a while too - squeezing in around 4 to 5 hours of wear and fading into a nice tint.
I think "Your Purchase Counts" is a great campaign to give and support this Mother's Day - and also a great excuse to stock up on some lipstick, cause you can never have too many lipsticks! AmIright?

What are you doing for Mother's Day?

If you're anything like me, curling your hair using an actual curling iron can be a challenge. I've pretty much accustomed myself to curling my hair with a straightener or a curling wand, but have never mastered using a curling iron. Enter the Irresistible Me's Ruby Auto Rotating Curler ($119)!
I know what you're thinking - is it safe to use? The answer is HELL YEAH! I'm not going to lie, my one friend was freaking me out when he was listing all the things that could go wrong: You want a burning hot tool to rotate? Isn't that a safety hazard? Are you sure this is safe? What if it pulls out your hair?
Pfft, proved him wrong!
The Ruby Auto Rotating Curler has a 1 inch barrel and is really easy to use.
When plugged in, a blue light will blink between the 5 different heat settings: 260, 300, 340, 380 and 420 degrees Fahrenheit. To turn on the curler, press and hold the bottom power button until the blue light stops blinking, then use the + and - signs to go to your preferred heat setting. To turn off the curler, press and hold the power button until the blue light starts blinking between the heat settings again.
At the clip of the rod, the curler has 3 buttons: Left, Right and a center red button. The L and R buttons are what you press in order to rotate the curler - simply clip your hair and press the button until you are satisfied. The center red button will reposition the wand to it's default position, as shown above. At first I thought the red button was kind of useless, but after using it a couple times I understand why it's there - it allows you to place down the wand down on it's little stand and it's helpful when you're at an awkward angle and can't reach the L/R buttons.
Don't worry about rotating too far and pulling your hair out - the clamp is just secure enough to grip the hair but with a small tug the hair will be released. No bald spots here!
It's something trivial, but I love that this curling wand comes with a cord wrapper - so many of my hair tools are forever tangled because the cords are like 10 feet long.
I love this curling wand because it creates both loose and tight curls, depending on how tight you rotate the wand and how long you hold the curl. I usually count to 10 when curling my hair but if it's just a touch up or more of a messy look, I hold it for 7 seconds. I found that my curls turned out smoother than normal because of the rotating wand - I didn't have to worry about stray hairs jumping in and ending up with frizzy and messy curls.
Here are my before and after results:
I am really impressed with the Ruby Auto Rotating Curler and would definitely recommend checking it out if you're looking for a new curling iron.
Bonus: it can also be used as a curling wand since the clip only goes halfway up the rod, leaving room for wrap around curls.

Which do you prefer: curling wands or curling irons?

It's been a couple months since NYX fully launched in Canada which means new products! I was especially excited to try the Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks and couldn't resist when they were on sale at Rexall for $6.99. With all 12 colours in stock and no testers, I ended up getting 9 of the colours hoping they would look exactly like the tube and they pretty much did.
The 12 colours Liquid Suede comes in are:
Stone Fox - Grey Blue
Life's A Beach - Coral Pink
Cherry Skies - Wine Red
Soft Spoken - Mauve Nude
Sandstorm - True Nude
Teas & Cookies - Tea Rose
Amethyst - Vibrant Purple
Kitten Heel - Scarlet Red
Vintage - Deep Plum Brown
Sway - Lavender
Pink Lust - Hot Pink
Orange County - Bright Orange
These cream lipsticks apply like a dream - easy to apply, pigmented, not sticky and long lasting. They also have a matte-like finish, not a drying matte but a satiny matte, if you know what I mean. The cream lipsticks come with a paddle applicator which makes an easy application, but not a very precise one. I like to take a lip brush to go over the outer lines when I'm done applying the lipstick - but this is a personal preference and I'm not good with liquid lipsticks to begin with.
I decided to wear Amethyst, the bold purple, to one of the Fashion Art Toronto shows. I was really impressed by how long it lasted. I applied it around 3pm and it lasted until I got home, which was around 11pm. I did touch it up once after dinner, but that was all it needed. It does get a bit messy when eating because it transfers, so I found bits of purple on my fingers, pizza crust, straw and napkin. Even with the transferring, most of the colour was there when I touched it up.
I apologize for the horrible selfie, but this is exactly what it looked like when I got home!
For $10 (or less!) it's definitely worth a try if you're interested in liquid lipsticks.

How do you apply liquid lipsticks? With a brush or with the applicator?

Last month,  to celebrate Burt's Bees' new Lipsticks, a lipstick art exhibition called Shades was held at the Arta Gallery in Toronto. Burt's Bees' new Lipstick has 14 shades and are made with 100% natural ingredients. At the gallery, attendees were able to view some fantastic artwork, print a picture, and swatch the many shades available and pick one to bring home.
There were other products on display for solely display purposes. (Not sure if these were later sold as I went to the exhibit pretty early during the week.)
What made this gallery extra special is that all the art work was made using the Burt's Bees Lipsticks. If a painting tickled your fancy, you were allowed to bid on it until the cap of $500 was reached. Here are some of my favourites!
I liked how these two paintings used a blowtorch and a hair dryer to melt the lipsticks.
The detail and shading for these two paintings were phenomenal.
There were so many shades to choose from and to pick one right then and there was so difficult. I think I swatched all the shades at least twice, but I finally decided on Lily Lake - a beautiful mauvy pink.
(Sorry for the horrible focus!)
I'm not a stranger to Burt's Bees products, but I definitely don't think this should be considered a lipstick. It is quite similar to their other tinted lip products - smooth, sheer and buildable. It's great for everyday use when you need a bit of tint on your lips, but don't expect full or opaque coverage.

What's your favourite Burt's Bees Product?
